Rachel Urven

Mrs. Rachel Urven was born in Maryland in about 1840. We have yet to find her birth family or her maiden name.

The first time we find here in the records, she’s living with her husband in 1870 near New Windsor. Two young children are with them. The older child had been born before the war. Young Samuel Irvin was likely her child from a previous relationship, although he used his step-father’s name. The census enumerator annotated a question mark for the 11-year-old’s occupation.

In 1880, they have two sons in the household and Mrs. Urven is keeping house as her husband worked on local farms as a day laborer.

By 1900, Mrs. Urven is working as a servant for a private household, while Mr. Urven worked as plasterer. Oddly, a young boy named Clarence Squirrel is enumerated as the Urven family’s servant although he is only 13 years old and is attending school.

Mrs. Rachel Urven died in the summer of 1903 and is buried in Western Chapel Cemetery. Her headstone has been recently cleaned.
