Western Chapel Cemetery
A church was established on Western Chapel Road in 1868, and the church’s cornerstone was laid in 1873. Mr. Amos Johns, George W. Cain, David Black, Cato Sides and Joshua Brown bought the land for $270 from Abraham and Mary Cassell. The church was known as Western Chapel Methodist Episcopal and had an adjoining graveyard.
On the 14th of April, 1954, a fire started and the small red brick church was completely consumed. Flames may have broken out when sparks from burning weeds in the cemetery set off the vines which ran along the chimney of the church.
The two-acre cemetery remains active and is maintained by descendants of those buried there.
